How to Cure Mosquito Bites?

Mosquito bites are more irritating than a child who is constantly asking for your phone to play games. In this article, we will tell you different ways to cure mosquito bites. Mosquitos are small creatures similar looking to flies that belong to the family Culicidae. The word Mosquito is a Spanish word for ‘Little Fly’. Females of most species are ectoparasites who have a tube-like mouth parts which are used to pierce the hosts’ skin so that it can suck blood.

Most mosquitoes bite at dusk or night when they are active the most. Male mosquitoes feed on nectar and water, and the do not bite humans which make them harmless. But female mosquitoes feed them themselves on the human blood.

Symptoms of Mosquito Bites:

The more the person has been bitten by the mosquitoes, the less the person will be sensitive to mosquito bites. This means that adults will be less sensitive to mosquito bites as compared to children. Mosquito bites show different types of symptoms, but most common of them is a soft bump on the skin, which is red or pink in colour and itchy. When female mosquito bites, she inserts her mouth part in our blood vessels and injects a protein in our blood cells which prevents the blood from clotting. It is the protein that causes the swelling and itchiness. Symptoms of mosquito bites may occur 48 hours after the bite.

Diseases Through Mosquito Bites:

1.) Malaria

Malaria is a disease caused by mosquitoes affecting humans and other animals. The symptoms of malaria include Fever, Fatigue, Vomiting, and Headache. In some cases, it can cause Yellow Skin, Coma, Seizures and even Death. Its symptoms begin after fifteen days of getting bitten.

2.) Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is another disease caused by the mosquitoes. People affected by dengue show only mild symptoms such as Fever. Symptoms begin usually between three to fourteen days after getting bit.

3.) Zika Virus

Zika Virus spread’s in Daytime by active mosquitoes. The Zika virus usually shows very less or no symptoms. There is no prescribed treatment for this virus, but Paracetamol and rest can help. As of 2016, there is no specific medicine or vaccinations which can prevent Zika. Zika can lead to various brain malformations and various birth defects in children.

4.) Yellow Fever

The symptoms of yellow fever include Fever, Chills, and Muscle Pain. An infected female mosquito can spread the virus and it only infects humans and other primates.

Ways to Cure Mosquito Bites

1.) Lemons to Heal Mosquito Bites

 Lemons contain an anti-inflammatory property that makes them very useful to cure mosquito bites. They have a pH value of 2 which makes it good to heal mosquito bite. Just cut a lemon into two pieces and rub the inner part of the lemon on the mosquito bitten area for a quick relief. You can even rub the yellow part of the lemon on the itchy skin. You can apply lemon juice on the infected area to avoid any infections. Add basil leaves to lemon juice to get the best results.

2.) Onion and Garlic to Cure Mosquito Bites

Onion and garlic repel’s the mosquitoes and it can even help reduce the swelling and itching caused by the mosquito bite. Apply sliced onion and garlic directly to the affected area and leave it there for a few minutes and wash it off. This will not only heal the mosquito bite, but it will also prevent mosquitoes from biting again.

3.) Baking Soda to Cure Mosquito Bites

Baking soda neutralises the pH value of the skin, which can effectively stop the itchiness caused by mosquito bites and providing relief.Dissolve one spoon Baking Soda in a glass of water.  Dip a clean cloth into the mixture and put the cloth on the mosquito bite for about 10 to 20 minutes. You can even make a paste of hazel and baking soda. Apply that paste on the mosquito bitten area and leave it there for at least 10 minutes. Now wash the area with lukewarm water to get the best results.

4.) Aloe Vera to Heal Mosquito Bites

Aloe Vera is used as a natural antiseptic, which makes it great to cure mosquito bites. Cut a big part of Aloe Vera and extract the gel from it. If you don’t have an Aloe Vera plant, then you can buy Aloe Vera gel from the market. Refrigerate the Aloe Vera gel for about 20 minutes. Now rub the Aloe Vera gel directly on the affected area. This process will not only cure your mosquito bite, but it will also make your skin smooth and healthy.

5.) Salt as a Treatment for Mosquito Bites

Salt have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which is very helpful to cure mosquito bite. This remedy is very easy and effective too. You have to make a paste of Garlic Salt, Seasoning Salt and Water in equal amounts and apply the paste directly to the mosquito bite. It can sting for a few seconds, but it will end in great relief. If you live near the beach, then you should get a good swim to bathe in salt water, which will help you to get relief from that mosquito bite.

6.) Ice to Cure Mosquito Bites

Cold temperature tends to stop the inflammatory substances and gives an instant relief from the mosquito bite. An ice pack is sure to help in getting relief from a mosquito bite. Take some ice and wrap it in a washcloth. Now hold the wrapped ice onto the affected area for about 10-15 minutes. This will give you quick relief from itchiness caused by the mosquito bite. If ice is not available, then you can use cold water too. Just hold a bottle filled with cold water onto the mosquito bitten area.

7.) Aspirin as a Treatment for Mosquito Bites

Aspirin tends to have the strong anti-inflammatory property that can help to cure mosquito bite. It can  even control the swelling caused by the mosquito bite. Take a regular aspirin tablet and grind it to make its powder. Make its paste by adding few drops of water to it. Now apply that paste to the mosquito bitten area and leave it for few hours and wash it with water. You can also rub an aspirin tablet over the affected area to get relief.

8.) Alcohol to Cure Mosquito Bites

Alcohol is a very common known antiseptic that is used to get relief from mosquito bites and its irritation. It can kill most of the germs and bacteria present on the skin, which makes it a good ingredient for treating mosquito bite. Take a small amount of alcohol on a cotton ball and rub it gently on the mosquito bite. It will sting a little, but after that, you will feel relief from the itching and irritation. If you are short of rubbing alcohol, you can even use a mouthwash that contains a high amount of alcohol or you can use vodka.

9.) Tea Tree Oil to Treat Mosquito Bites

Sometimes tea tree oil is used as an antiseptic as it has strong antiseptic properties which can help to cure mosquito bite. It can also be used to cure bacteria infected wounds. It will also reduce swelling and irritation caused by mosquito bites. Simply take some tea tree oil on a cotton ball and apply on the affected area. You can use lavender oil If you have sensitive skin as tea tree oil can result in skin irritation.

10.) Toothpaste to Cure Mosquito Bites

Toothpaste can help in minimizing the itchiness and irritation caused by the mosquito bite. It has cooling particles,which helps in making the skin cool. Just apply the toothpaste on the mosquito bitten area. Use toothpaste with peppermint as it has anti-inflammatory properties.  You can even use toothpaste which has baking soda and menthol.
